WHO: No miracle solution, the pandemic is accelerating around the world

No immediate hope of improvement seems possible. The covid-19 epidemic has reached all continents and particularly affects Latin America and the Caribbean, where the number of infections has reached 5 million, with more than 16,000 new cases in one day in Brazil alone.

The vaccine race continues but there is currently no miracle solution against Covid-19, the WHO warned on Monday, as the pandemic continues to accelerate around the world and pushes some cities like Melbourne, in Australia, to close the doors of shops.

“There is no cure-all and there may never be,” said World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Clinical trials give us hope. This does not necessarily mean that we will have a vaccine that is effective, especially over time, he explained.

Several countries are engaged in the battle for vaccines, some are in the final stages of testing. Russia assured Monday that it would soon be able to produce “several million” doses in early 2021.

In the meantime, the pace of the pandemic continues to accelerate, particularly in the United States and Latin America. To date, more than 18 million people worldwide have been infected with the virus and more than 680,000 have died from it, according to a report drawn up on Monday.
